Treatment of Knee Injuries

Simple treatments are often helpful for minor injuries and in the early stages of more serious injuries. These include:

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

All of which will help with pain and swelling. But other treatments may also be needed such as:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Bracing
  • Injections (with steroid, anaesthetic, or lubricant)
  • Modification of activities
  • Surgery

Structures that may need treating include:

  • Tendons
  • Joint surface cartilage
  • Bone
  • Menisci
  • Ligaments – anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, collateral ligaments
  • The knee cap (patella)
